Last stop on Market Street
I highly recommend this book to read it in the classroom because it would be a good discussion point in terms of the differences of the city compared to the suburbs and I know most kids will feel identified because they live in the city and they had taken or seen public transportation and also the diversity of people you can find inside a bus and how it makes it to appreciate the things you see around in a better way. Students can also discuss the strong relationship the boy has with his grandma and how they can relate it to their family experiences they have before/after school. It would also show students how diverse the world is and the different lifestyles people have and how we need to value, respect, appreciate and learn from them because it gives you more opportunities to find more connections with your background. I will bring back my previous experience of living in a city of 8,000,000 people and provide some examples not just on transportation but also how neighborhoods might look different and what services can people access in a city and also bring their own experiences from where they live and enrich their conversation by hearing their thoughts based on the reflections we can have from this amazing book.
Another thing we can analyze in the classroom is the illustrations and the technique the illustrator use (collage) for the book. if we want to include other content areas such as Arts, we can work with the Art teacher to provide the insight regarding this illustration technique used in the book.
