Drum Dream Girl

Drum Dream Girl: How One Girl's Courage Changed Music
By  Margarita Engle
Illustrated By Rafael Lopez

This story is about a girl who loves to drum.  She has to dream about drumming though, because it is not socially acceptable on her island for girls to be drummers.  Throughout the story she continues to work toward her goal of drumming in public no matter how many people tell her she can't.  One day, her father told her that she could take drumming lessons.  It is decided that the teacher will determine is she has the skill to perform in public.  Will the drum dream girl ever get to share her gift with the world?

I would recommend this book to students of all ages.  It lends itself well to discussions about gender equality and the historical significance of this true story that took place in Cuba.  I could see it tying into reading material for older students about different perspectives surrounding these situations.  The text is easy to read and very colorful, so this book would also be a great read aloud for young students.  I can see young students having a lot of rich conversations about whether it is fair that the drum dream girl is not allowed to drum.
