This story is about a transgender child. He was born a boy, but as a young child he never felt like a boy and identified with being a girl. This story takes you through Jazz's journey to find her identity and be accepted for who she is. Along the way it talks about the confusion some felt about this change, but it also shows how strong and resilient Jazz was. The story's message is clear: It is important to be yourself no matter if that means you are "different".
I think this would be interesting and important for students (and parents) so they can learn a little more about what it means to be transgender. It is a way for them to see what the child is thinking and feeling and what they have to deal with along the way to finding themselves. I hope it brings, awareness, knowledge, understanding, and acceptance. It was used this year in my school with 2nd graders, but I think this introduction to transgender would be helpful to any age. At first I was thinking this would be best for someone who isn't transgender, but as I began typing, I changed my mind. I would be great for anyone. Great for someone who is transgender (or even if they think they might be) and afraid to embrace it and share with others and great for those who are not transgender to be more understanding and accepting.
