Islandborn

Islandborn by Junot Diaz
Illustrated by Leo Espinosa

This book is about a girl named Lola who gets an assignment from her teacher to draw a picture of the country she comes from.  Lola realizes she does not remember anything about The Island, which is the place she comes from.  She asks those in her neighborhood to tell her what they remember most about The Island and she takes those memories and turns them into something special.  This book does not mention the name of the country Lola comes from, but with a quick Google search you can see that The Island most likely refers to the Dominican Republic, where the author is from.

I think this book is good for kids and teens alike.  Young students would be drawn to the beautiful and colorful artwork throughout this story.  There is also a lot of information that has both literal and figurative meanings, which would make for great discussion. It also has the theme of belonging somewhere and accepting others and where they come from.  This idea lends itself well to people of all ages.
