My Name Is Yoon

My Name Is Yoon by Helen Recorvits & pictures by Gabi Swiatkowska.
It would be appropriate for any student who has had to move to a new place and has felt out of place.
It would be more relevant to immigrants from other countries, especially Korea.

This book is about a little girl named Yoon who moves to America from Korea.
She has to go to school and write her name in English and she does not want to.
She writes other words on her papers and wants to go back to Korea where she had friends
and she was the teacher’s favorite student.

I think this book would be interesting to students because many feel nervous about
the first day of school in a new class.  Students wouldn’t have to have had the experience
of immigrating or moving to connect to the main character and empathize.
It could also be used on the first day of school paired with a name activity or if a new student joins the class.

This book could be used in many grades, but I would recommend this book to elementary
classroom teachers or ELL teachers as it is about a young immigrant child and school.
It can be used for social-emotional learning or it could be used to discuss immigration.
