The Day the War Came

“The Day the War Came” tells the story of a young girl who is forced to flee her country when the war comes to her town and destroys it. She is shown running to a refugee camp by herself. Near the end of the book, she is trying to enter a school but is turned away because there isn’t room for her. At the end of the story, a young boy offers her a chair and entry into the classroom.
This picture book is a powerful and heartbreaking account of how war affects children around the world. I got this book for the library and read it to my own children. I think intermediate to upper elementary school students would benefit from reading this book and discussing what it would be like to lose your home and family due to war. My own children who are 3 and 5 were too young to grasp what happened in the story, but we were able to discuss how the boy at the end helped the young girl. It is difficult to find the balance between exposing children to war and the injustices that so many people face in our world, and trying to keep them from being scared. I think it would be perfect to have a critical discussion with upper elementary or middle schoolers about this and use nonfiction articles relating to how the US is currently treating refugee and migrant children.
