Under My Hijab

Review By: Erin Streefland
Under My Hijab by Hena Khan, illustrated by Aaliya Jaleel
This story provides a kid-friendly introduction to hijabs for all readers and celebrates Muslim women and girls who wear them.
In this story, a young girl describes the different women in her life.  She specifically describes
how they wear and customize their hijab based on their interests.  She describes how these
women act in public and in private environments with their hijab.
This story gives students an understanding of the hijab and how Muslim women can show
their uniqueness based on the way they wear their hijab.  The author helps students build
connections to the young girl by incorporating common interests for all kids including cooking,
sports, and role models they look up to.  There is also a sing-song of rhyming throughout the
book.
I would recommend this book to read aloud in classrooms in which students are beginning to
understand diversity and the physical/visible aspects of the Muslim culture around them. It
helps students understand the hijab in the Muslim culture and builds confidence especially in
young Muslim girls.  It promotes basic understanding of the hijab and shares how we can
make connections to one another.
