Have you ever heard of a woman named Harriet Quimby? Harriet the Brave is her story.  In 1912 Harriet was the first woman to fly across the English Channel. Many doubted her and few supported her. She followed her own inner voice and made her own decisions in a time in history where this was not encouraged for a woman.  Why is her story unknown?  Another, rather significant event occurred on the same week of her daring adventure.  Read the story to find out more.

This is a great story for all ages.  It is a great tool for adding more breath and depth to American history. and specifically the history of women in aviation. The story could be used to discuss women's role in history as well as the role of wealth in history. If your students or children seem to be intrigued by Amelia Earheart, this story will also engage their imagination. Harriet the Brave is an inspiring story for anyone, especially those who dream big dreams.
