I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark

I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark  written by Debbie Levy and illustrated by Elizabeth Baddeley
is a book that challenges gender and religious stereotypes and prejudice.  It is a picture book, but could be used at
any level. I think all students could learn from it; one should not be restricted because of the group they belong to.
In Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s case she was discriminated against based on her gender and religion. She took her
experiences of discrimination as inspiration to fight against injustice as she rose to the highest court in the
United States.

This book features the major events and experiences in Ruth’s life that helped shape her desire to be a judge, from
her childhood and school career to her life as a wife and mother.  It is told in an engaging narrative format
and includes a more detailed biography at the end along with additional information and resources.

I think this book would be interesting to students because they get to see what history was like with the personal
perspective of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.  Sometimes history can be boring, but if given a personal perspective
and a connection to a human it may be more interesting. Oftentimes, cultural awareness focuses on race, but this
book shows how the other rings of culture can affect someone’s identity and how we need to be open to accepting
others.
