In this energetically written story, the premise is the affirmation that black boys feel and receive after going to "the shop" for a fresh haircut. The author's word choices pair beautifully with the painted illustrations that captivate the reader. In this selection, the audience will easily relate to the excitement of looking in the mirror after the barber has completed the job, admiring the new look.
I believe this story will be interesting to K-5 students of all ages and ethnicities. Many connections will be made with the actual experience of getting a haircut, yet above and beyond, the author includes terminology that will appeal to today's pop culture. Some phrases are left to multiple interpretations, while others would require pre-teaching for a younger reader. I would definitely recommend this book for all ages as even a light interpretation of the text points to the euphoria brought on by having a positive self image. Once you do have your hands on this book, it would be a huge mistake not to read "A Note from the Author" at the end of the text. It absolutely leaves you with an astounding quote that will capture the heart of all caregivers and teachers of the marginalized.
