Out of Wonder: Poems Celebrating Poets is authored by Kwame Alexander with Chris Colderley and Marjory Wentworth. The illustrations are by Ekua Holms. This book won the Coretta Scott King Award in 2018. The authors celebrate twenty different poets by writing in their style. The book is divided into three sections, Got Style?, In Your Shoes, and Thank You. Each section begins with a quick introduction, giving the reader something to look for in the upcoming poems.
I would recommend this book for all ages and grade levels. This book would work wonderfully throughout a poetry unit. It shows students that it is okay to try on someone else’s style in order to find your voice. The authors also select poets who write very differently, showing the reader that poetry doesn’t have to look the same. This book doesn’t need to be read from cover to cover, as each page brings a new story to the reader. Additionally, the book includes a biography of each poem included in the book. Teachers and students could use this when exploring authors and poets and discuss how their lives impacted their poetry.
