Title: Imagine
Author: Juan Felipe Herrera
Illustrator: Lauren Castillo
Reader’s Interest: “Imagine what you could do…”
Brief Overview:
Imagine is Juan
Felipe’s journey as a little boy experiencing change and his ability to achieve
his dreams. Juan Felipe grew up saying goodbye to friends as he and his family
moved through small farming towns. When old enough, he attended a school in the
larger city with little knowledge of English. He dedicated his time to learn English
by practicing the unfamiliar words and reciting them in Spanish. Using ink-filled
pens he formed stories, created poetry, and eventually turned them into songs. The
story ends with Juan Felipe reading his poetry book at the Library of Congress.
Why you think this book would be interesting to students:
Imagine is an
inspiring story for young children of all ages to see that no matter their
previous life experiences they can achieve whatever they want. It’s a good
story to show that hard work and dedication can help one be successful.
