Say Something

Say Something by Peter H. Reynolds
Review by Kerry Hallee

This books is about how we can use our voice to make a difference and to make the world a better place. It highlights both the big and small ways to accomplish this.  Each page shares a simple example of how to do this through words, actions and creativity.

The author reminds all of us that our voices matter and that we are each able to make the world a better place.  Students will connect with the simple text, illustrations, and examples.  While the Scholastic website states that this book is for ages 4-8, I believe that it could be a powerful tool to elicit discussion in the classroom through middle school.   I have used this book with students who rarely use their voice in their classroom due to both language and fear.  Identifying and reaffirming ways that our voices have power and practicing how we can use them is important for identity as well as the greater good.

This book will leave you reflecting on how to use your own voice to make a difference.
