Something Beautiful

Something Beautiful

Children of all ages and grade levels will love this story, because they will explore that despite our circumstances, our outlook on life can take us far. The little girl in this story chose to look for the good in the world.

Based on a true story of the author’s experience as a little girl, Something Beautiful will open your eyes to a whole new world. Something Beautiful is about a little girl who is growing up in a rough, rundown part of town. She looks out her window and sees garbage, homelessness, and danger. After a conversation with her mother, she decides she needs to go in search of her something beautiful. She takes us through her life and her neighborhood, meeting and seeing many people and places around where she lives. A heartwarming story (grab the tissues!) that teaches us beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

My third graders loved when I read this book aloud to them as part of our literacy curriculum. Whether or not students can relate to the little girl in the story, they can relate to her feelings and the themes presented in the story. Ultimately, I think my students loved the heartwarming ending and also could empathize and learn about a culture that is different from their own.
